The C&D Canal Wildlife Area is a greenway consisting of almost 5,200 acres of wilderness lining the shores of the C&D Canal in southern New Castle County. The western section (address above) even features two retrieving-dog training areas.

This man-made waterway connects two large estuaries: the tidal Delaware River and the Chesapeake Bay. Approximately 25,000 boats travel this vibrant waterway every year.

Construction of a 14-mile, recreational trail began on the north side of this waterway in July of 2012. The first phase will span nine miles, from Delaware City to Summit Marina of Bear. It will open in 2013 in honor of former Represent-ative Michael Castle, who first proposed the idea in 2004.

Before your arrival, we recommend you consult the current schedule of hunting seasons. Or, if you're ever in doubt, simply wear hunters' orange or other bright colors. Also, please be advised that wildlife areas typically keep signage to a minimum, so a compass or GPS unit may be a wise thing to pack.
